Big Think: Libraries as Learning Hubs: Collaboration, Care, and Community Inquiry

School libraries sit at the intersection of access, equity, and community—and the librarians who steward them are often the quiet engines helping schools learn, adapt, and grow. This Big Think brings together two incredible library leaders with Lead by Learning’s Senior Director to explore how collaborative inquiry strengthens educator practice, supports student well-being, and sparks new possibilities in their school communities. Together, we’ll reflect on the challenges and the hope inherent in this work, and consider what vibrant, learner-centered library programs make possible for both young people and the adults who serve them.

Guest Bios

Allyson Bogie is in her 21st year as an educator and currently works as a teacher librarian at Berkeley High School in Berkeley, California. Allyson has also worked in other East Bay districts as a district library TSA,  teacher librarian, and middle school teacher. She goes to work every day to live out her belief that well-funded, professionally staffed libraries are an essential ingredient for schools, providing a safe and nurturing space for all students to learn and thrive. When she's not at school, you can find Allyson swimming, spending time with her family, and sewing.

Samantha Solomon joined OUSD as an English Teacher in 2011. In 2017, she had the pleasure of reopening the Calvin Simmons Library, which serves students in grades 6-12 at both Life Academy and United for Success Academy. After being closed for 9 years, the library now sees about 80 drop-in students a day and partners with teachers and classes for lessons around research and media literacy. When not at school, you might find Sam on rollerskates, camping, or (surprise) reading while cuddling her cats, Albert and Minerva.

Sarah Sugarman (she/her) believes in the power of learning communities that honor educators’ professionalism, where colleagues supportively challenge each other to hone their practice in service of equitable outcomes for students. As Senior Director at Lead by Learning, she ensures organizational coherence between Lead by Learning’s partnership programs and its visibility and community engagement initiatives, as well as overseeing staff development and evaluation, and quality assurance programs. Previously, Sarah taught second and third grade in East Oakland and then at the Mills College Children’s School, including mentoring pre-service teachers and participating in teacher-led inquiry projects with the Mills College Lesson Study Group and Japanese math educators from Global Education Resources. Sarah received her B.A. in Urban Studies from Brown University and her M.A. in Education from Mills College.
