What School Could Be

Purpose-driven, Real-World Learning in Virginia.

Innovation and real-world learning define education in Virginia, where schools across the state—urban, suburban, and rural—are transforming what it means to learn. From community schools to technical centers, students from kindergarten through high school are engaging in experiences that tap into their interests and connect knowledge to purpose, preparing them to thrive beyond the classroom.

Collaboration lies at the heart of this movement. Parents, educators, business leaders, universities, and the Virginia Department of Education are working together—with students—to design learning that reflects the needs and aspirations of each community. Education in Virginia no longer follows the “information in, information out” model. Instead, it invites students to explore, create, and lead.

What School Could Be is thrilled to share twelve examples of schools across Virginia who are developing future-ready skills through experiential learning, including work-based learning experiences. Students apply knowledge to authentic challenges, demonstrating mastery through portfolios, exhibitions, and presentations that showcase their depth of understanding.

Virginia’s educators are amplifying student voice and agency, nurturing curiosity, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. Classrooms have become labs for learning—places where students discover their interests, solve real-world problems, and shape their futures.

Watch. Be inspired. Share. This is school in Virginia; we invite you to dive in!
